Billabong,
one of the most recognizable surfwear brands in
the world, offers a range of apparel and
accessories that appeal to young people (mostly
teens and 20-something), both male and female,
across the globe. One of the top 3 core
boardsports brands (the other being Quiksilver and
Rip Curl), Billabong is known for their tradition
of manufacturing stylish and functional products
that allow the customer to experience the
lifestyle that Billabong proudly represents.
Billabong started its life in the early 70's as a
little homespun factory that manufactured
hand-made boardshorts in Burleigh, Australia. The
Billabong brand has subsequently grown to become
today's apparel conglomerate, Billabong
International Ltd. Listed on the Australian stock
exchange, the company employs a total of 10,000
people, sells its extensive range of products to
more than 100 countries around the world, and
earns an annual revenue topping AUD 1 Billion. Now
encompassing 8 brands (including Element, Nixon,
Von Zipper, Xcel Wetsuits, etc), Billabong
International has managed to expand its product
range and established itself as one of the major
players in the international market of not merely
that of surf wear, but also those of surfboards,
wetsuits, skateboarding apparel, snowboard
outerwear and fashion accessories.
Billabong was set-up in 1973 by founder, Gordon
Merchant, a surfer-turned businessman, who was
driven by the single desire to produce the highest
quality boardshorts on the market. The future
success of Billabong had already been firmly laid
in the first product made by the Merchants (Gordon
and wife, Rena): the hand-made Billabong
boardshorts that were hand-stitched using Gordon's
own stitching technique. The popularity of
Billabong boardshorts grew on the strength of
their long-lasting durability, which was a cut
above the competition, including those from
established brands, during the 70's.
